The Low NOx System installed on G3500 has proven to lower NOx exhaust emissions without a loss in power [1340 HP @ 1200 -1500RPM on G3516]. It is currently installed on over 60 engines throughout the USA, including emissions sensitive areas in California and Texas. Half of a gram per brake horsepower – hour of NOx or less than can be obtained with no increase in CO emissions. The engine is limited to 1000 feet elevation and 100°F ambient without a power reduction. Use standard derating charts.

The HiVolEffTM Low NOx System increases air flow through the engine due to improved air flow efficiency. The added [air] mass in the cylinder with the same fuel energy input lowers the combustion temperature with the result of lower NOx emissions. Certified emissions test indicate that NOx of less than 80 PPM NOx can be obtained while CO is unaffected.

The system works with all G3500 engines with Electronic Ignition System (EIS) or ADEM III control systems with CAT® or Denso® spark plugs. It is also compatible with the Engine Supervisory System (ESS). Only slight adjustments to the wastegate and air fuel ratio control are required to meet the 1⁄2g NOx emissions.

The installation is simple and requires some modification of current engine components, which can be completed in typically 4-6 hours. The maintenance of the engine is not adversely impacted while oil life is improved due to less nitration.

The current CAT G3500 engine is limited to between 2 to 1.5 g/BHP-Hr NOx emissions. In many regions of the USA are EPA non-attainment areas and the current emission are well above permit levels. So the well proven, reliable “work horse” engine can not be used in these areas until now.

Based on the success of the Hi Vol Eff system and the Xtra Lo NOx will take the G3500 series into EPA non-attainment areas. With emissions levels of 0.15 g/BHPHr attainable with little or no power loss, this engine arguably can be placed anywhere in the USA ,or the world for that matter.

The G3500 engine can be modified relatively easily. The Xtra Lo NOx kit includes Hi Vol Eff system, new high flow air cleaners, dry turbine turbochargers, and a proprietary high flow carburetor.

The value this kit provides is the ability to place a low maintenance lean burn G3516 engine in EPA non-attainment areas. Currently only a three way catalyst engine or an engine with SCR catalyst can be placed in these areas without purchasing emissions credits. The Xtra Lo NOx kit will allow the engine to operate at 0.15 g/BHPHr. If the engine is placed in a non-attainment area where higher emissions limits are established then the engine can generate emission credits. For example, if a G3516 engine is set in an area where 0.5 g/BHPHr is the established regulation limit and the engine is set to obtain 0.15 g/BHPHr; then that engine will produce only 1.9 tons/year of NOx. The same engine at 0.5 g/BHPHr produces 6.5 tons/year. That is a difference of 4.6 ton/ year. Emissions credits are worth $100,000 – $165,000 per ton/year. So the value in emissions credit is $460,000 to $759,000 per year per engine. The return on investment is one to two months!
